8-Year NBA Veteran O.J. Mayo Reportedly Signs With New Team
O.J. Mayo most recently played in the NBA during the 2015-16 season when he appeared in 41 games (24 starts) for the Milwaukee Bucks.
That year, he averaged 7.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals per contest while shooting 37.1% from the field and 32.1% from the three-point range.
However, the 36-year-old was dismissed and disqualified from the NBA (for at least two years) after violating the terms of the Anti-Drug Program in the summer of 2016.
Mayo has never returned to the NBA, but he has spent several seasons playing overseas.
Recently, Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype reported that Mayo has signed a deal with the Liaoning Flying Leopards (a team in the CBA).
During the 2020 season, Mayo averaged 28.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.5 steals per contest while shooting 57.0% from the field and 43.5% from the three-point range in 15 games for the Flying Leopards.
Coming out of high school, Mayo was ranked by ESPN as the third-best player in the country.
After one season of college basketball playing for USC, he was the third pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Over eight seasons in the NBA, Mayo played for the Memphis Grizzlies (four seasons), Dallas Mavericks (one season) and Milwaukee Bucks (three seasons).
His career averages are 13.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 42.9% from the field and 37.3% from the three-point range in 547 regular season games.
He has also appeared in 26 NBA playoff games (two starts).
