Atlanta Hawks Release NBA Champion Point Guard

The Atlanta Hawks have waived Patty Mills.

UPDATE: The Hawks have officially used their open roster spot to sign Trent Forrest to the 15-man roster.

On Thursday evening, the Atlanta Hawks will face off against Mikal Bridges and the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center in New York.

Before the game, the team announced that they had waived Patty Mills.

The 2014 NBA Champion had been averaging 2.7 points and 1.1 rebounds per contest while shooting 37.3% from the field and 38.2% from the three-point range in 19 games.

Via The Atlanta Hawks: "We have requested waivers on guard Patty Mills."

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported what the Hawks will do with their open roster spot.

Via Charania: "Hawks plan to use open roster spot to convert two-way guard Trent Forrest on a standard NBA contract, per league sources. Forrest has played 20 games this season, his second in Atlanta after being in Utah from 2020-22."

In addition to the Hawks, Mills has also spent time with the Brooklyn Nets, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs.

His career averages are 8.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest while shooting 42.5% from the field and 38.9% from the three-point range in 879 regular season games.

The 15-year veteran has appeared in 95 NBA playoff games, so he has a lot of experience and could be a good addition to a contending team's bench.

As for the Hawks, they are the tenth seed in the Eastern Conference with a 26-32 record in 58 games.

They are in the middle of a two-game winning streak and are 5-5 over their last ten games.
