BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs Make Significant Announcement

The San Antonio Spurs have announced that Gregg Popovich has agreed to a contract extension.

UPDATE: ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has reported the details of Popovich's new contract.

Via Wojnarowski: "Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s new five-year deal is worth more than $80 million, sources tell ESPN. His deal resets the coaching market after Monty Williams’ recent six-year, $78.5 million deal with Detroit."

Gregg Popovich is the longest-tenured head coach in the NBA.

He has been at the helm for the San Antonio Spurs since the 1996-97 season.

On Saturday, the team announced that the future Hall of Famer signed a five-year contract extension with the organization.

Via The Spurs: "The San Antonio Spurs today announced that President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Gregg Popovich has signed a five-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not released."

The Spurs are coming off a season where they were the 15th seed in the Western Conference and tied with the Houston Rockets for the second-worst record in the NBA (22-60).

They have been in rebuilding mode for several seasons and haven't been to the NBA Playoffs since 2019.

That said, the Spurs had the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and selected Victor Wembanyama last month.

The 19-year-old has the potential to be an All-Star and is seen as one of the best prospects in the league's history.

Even though the last four years have been a struggle, the Spurs are one of the premier franchises in the NBA.

Popovich has helped lead them to five NBA Championships since the 1999 season, and they have had legendary players such as Tony Parker, David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginóbili.

Therefore, Wembanyama is in an excellent place to grow into a potential franchise-changing player.
