Former NBA 2nd Overall Pick Is Still A Free Agent

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (the second pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets) is a free agent.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was last with an NBA team (New York Knicks) during the 2020-21 preseason but was waived before appearing in a game.

The former Kentucky star was once a top prospect and was the second pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets.

His last appearance came during the 2019-20 season when he was a member of the Dallas Mavericks (and Hornets).

That season, Kidd-Gilchrist averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest in 25 games (he also appeared in six NBA playoff games).

At just 29 years old, he remains a free agent, available to sign with any team in the league.

Kidd-Gilchrist helped lead the Wildcats to the NCAA Championship during his one season at Kentucky.

He came into the NBA at 19, so he has extensive experience playing in 446 regular season games with career averages of 8.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per contest while shooting 47.4% from the field and 27.2% from the three-point range.

The veteran forward has also played in ten NBA playoff games with averages of 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest.

While Kidd-Gilchrist is no longer in his prime, he could be a good pickup for a contending team's bench.

There are many teams that do not have cap space but need to add the right role players.

Even though Kidd-Gilchrist did not live up to his All-Star potential, he was always a reliable defender and is an eight-year NBA veteran that will only be 30 when the season begins.
