Former Lakers Center Wins G League Defensive Player Of The Year

Former Los Angeles Lakers and current Washington Wizards big man Jay Huff was recently named the 2022-23 Kia NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year.

On Tuesday, the NBA G League announced that former Los Angeles Lakers and current Washington Wizards center Jay Huff was named the 2022-23 Kia NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year.

Recently signing a two-way contract with the Wizards last month, Huff has spent a vast majority of the season with the South Bay Lakers and the Capital City Go-Go in the G League.

This season in the G League, Huff led the league in blocks per game (3.1) and total blocks (87). He also averaged 15.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Prior to adding Huff to their roster, the Capital City Go-Go, the G League affiliates of the Wizards, had the league's 12th best defensive rating. Once Jay Huff arrived, their defensive rating jumped up to the third-best in the league.

Ranking seventh in defensive rating prior to Huff joining Washington, the South Bay Lakers dropped to 14th in defensive rating with Huff's departure.

While he did recently sign a two-way contract with the Wizards, Jay Huff is only under contract for the 2022-23 season and will become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the league year.

So far this season, Huff has only played in four games for the Washington Wizards, averaging 1.8 points and 1.0 rebounds in 3.8 minutes per game.
