NBA Hands Out Punishments For Grizzlies-Cavaliers Altercation On Thursday Night

On Friday evening, the NBA announced that they have suspended Memphis Grizzlies wing Dillon Brooks one game and have fined Donovan Mitchell for their on-court altercation during Thursday night’s Grizzlies-Cavaliers game.

Memphis Grizzlies wing Dillon Brooks and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell were both ejected from Thursday night’s Grizzlies-Cavaliers matchup after an altercation broke out.

With just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter of Thursday’s game, Brooks drove to the rim and thought he was fouled, but the referees made no call in his favor. Getting up off the floor, Dillon Brooks appeared to blatantly strike Mitchell in the groin region, resulting in the Cavaliers’ guard chucking the ball off of Brooks’ back.

The two teams immediately got into a shuffle with Mitchell and Brooks at the center of everything, pushing and shoving one another.

The NBA is always quick to react to situations like these, especially if ejections occur, and on Friday evening, they announced that Dillon Brooks has been suspended one game without pay for his antics and basically causing this fight to break out.

Donovan Mitchell was not suspended, but he was fined $20,000 due to his involvement.

Brooks will serve his suspension on February 5 when the Grizzlies host the Toronto Raptors.

During his time with the Utah Jazz, Donovan Mitchell had quite a few battles with Dillon Brooks and in his postgame comments, Mitchell did not hold back calling out the Grizzlies wing.

“Him and I have had our personal battles for years,” Mitchell said. “Quite frankly, I've been busting his ass for years.”

This was the second meeting on the season between Cleveland and Memphis and they will not meet each other again until next season, that is unless both teams make the 2023 NBA Finals.
