Former NBA MVP Will Reportedly Be A Free Agent

According to Steve Popper of Newsday Sports, the New York Knicks will not pick up Derrick Rose's player option for the 2023-24 NBA season.

Derrick Rose was once among one of the best players in the NBA when he played for the Chicago Bulls.

The former Memphis Star won the 2011 MVP Award after averaging 25.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 44.5% from the field.

However, Rose later dealt with significant injuries that derailed his prime and instead transitioned into a solid role player.

Most recently, Rose has been with the New York Knicks for the last two and a half seasons.

On Saturday, Steve Popper of Newsday Sports reports that the Knicks will not pick up his $15.6 million player option for the 2023-24 season.

Therefore, the former superstar will become an unrestricted free agent.

This past year, Rose fell out of the rotation and averaged 5.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest while shooting 38.4% from the field (he only averaged 12.5 minutes of playing time).

That said, the 34-year-old played a significant role in the Knicks making the NBA Playoffs during the 2021 season.

At this stage of his career, he could still play a pivotal role off the bench for a team in need of point guard depth.

In addition to the Knicks and Bulls, Rose has also played for the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers.

His career averages are 17.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest while shooting 45.6% from the field over 699 regular season games (he has also played in 52 NBA Playoff games).
