San Antonio Spurs Reportedly Release 3-Year NBA Player

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the San Antonio Spurs will release Lamar Stevens.

Lamar Stevens is coming off a season where he averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 44.8% from the field in 62 regular season games for the Cleveland Cavaliers (he also appeared in two NBA playoff games).

Earlier this month, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a three-team deal.

However, Stevens will not be playing for the Spurs next season, as Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported that he will be waived.

Via Charania: "The Spurs are waiving forward Lamar Stevens, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. The defensive-minded Stevens averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 62 games (25 starts) for the Cavaliers last season."

At 26, Stevens could end up being a good pickup for many teams around the league.

Over his three seasons in the NBA (all with the Cavs), the former Penn State star has averages of 5.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest while shooting 46.7% from the field in 165 regular season games.

This past year, the Cavs were the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with a 51-31 record and made the NBA playoffs for the first time since the 2018 season.

As for the Spurs, they are one of the best franchises in the NBA, winning five titles since the 1999 season.

That said, the team hasn't made the playoffs for four years and is coming off a season where they went 22-60 (tied for the second-worst record in the league).

Yet, there is significant excitement around the Spurs because they selected Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the NBA Draft last month.
