Paul Scholes Says Man United Cannot Afford To Sack Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes does not believe that his former club should sack manager Erik ten Hag.

Scholes, working as a pundit for TNT Sports, watched United fall to a 4-3 defeat away to FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

This was United's ninth loss in 17 games this season.

Such an awful run of form has led some spectators to suggest that Ten Hag is on borrowed time.

But Scholes said following Wednesday's game: "I still don't feel like there's that much pressure on Erik ten Hag.

"He had a good year [last season] and bought some time. He's had bad injuries but nine defeats in 17 is not good enough.

"I know United have sacked before, but I don't think they can afford to keep doing that."

It would cost United around £15 million in compensation to fire Ten Hag, according to The Athletic.

However, Scholes was not talking about the financial implications when he claimed that United could not "afford" to get rid of Ten Hag.

Scholes was suggesting that United will struggle to build sustainable success on the pitch if they are not patient with the man in the dugout.

United had led 2-0 in Denmark until Marcus Rashford was sent off in the 42nd minute.

"Ten Hag got unlucky tonight," Scholes added. "But United put up a good fight. They lacked a bit of leadership. It's not easy to play away in Europe.

"It's just that collapsing that's hurting them. Once they concede one it feels like another is coming. You can't keep doing that every week."
