Wayne Rooney Says Mason Greenwood Should "Get Out" Of Manchester United To "Get His Career Back On Track"

Wayne Rooney believes that Mason Greenwood should leave Manchester United in order to resurrect his career.

Greenwood, 21, has been suspended by United since January 2022 when he was arrested by police.

He was later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behavior, and assault, but all charges against him were dropped in February 2023.

Despite no longer facing any criminal charges, Greenwood is still the subject of a club investigation into his conduct.

While that investigation continues he will not be selected for matches nor be permitted to join team training sessions.

Greenwood is under contract with United until June 2025 but he may be allowed to leave this summer if a suitable offer is received.

Rooney, who scored 253 goals in 559 games for United between 2004 and 2017, thinks that a transfer away from Old Trafford would be the best thing for Greenwood.

In an interview with The Athletic this week, Rooney said that Greenwood was "in a position where he is stuck".

The DC United manager added: "So for Mason, it's a bad position to be in because I'm sure he just wants to play football.

"But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it's almost a catch 22. I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else.

"He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time. With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it's probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.

"It's a difficult position for Mason but for the club as well. You have to make sure you get to the right decision before moving forward and it looks like they're really struggling to get to that place."
