Kylian Mbappe Recreates Famous Nani Goal By Embarrassing Lorient Keeper But PSG Lose At Home

Kylian Mbappe scored one of the most bizarre goals of the season during Paris Saint-Germain's home loss to Lorient on Sunday.

It came in the 29th minute moments after Lorient keeper Yvon Mvogo had deliberately dropped the ball on the ground to take a free-kick.

But the referee had not awarded a free-kick.

Mbappe sharply intercepted the ball and kicked it into the net from seven yards.

Mvogo and his teammates protested to the referee but the goal stood.

Moments earlier Mbappe had thrown himself to the ground in an attempt to win a penalty kick.

The referee did not award a penalty but neither did he penalize Mbappe for diving, so the ball was still in play.

Fortunately for Mvogo, this error did not cost his team any points as Lorient went on to win 3-1.

Mbappe's goal had come nine minutes after PSG were reduced to 10 men when Achraf Hakimi was sent off for picking up two early yellow cards.

Enzo Le Fee scored the game's opening goal before Mbappe's controversial leveler.

Darline Yongwa and Bamba Dieng later found the net as PSG suffered their ninth defeat of 2023.

Nani Did It First

Mbappe's strange goal was remarkably similar to one scored by Nani for Manchester United against Tottenham in October 2010.

Nani famously shot into the net of a baffled Heurelho Gomes, who thought that referee Mark Clattenburg had given Spurs a free-kick.

Like with Sunday's incident, Nani's goal originated from a failed penalty appeal.

The main difference was that Nani had committed a clear offense by putting his hand on the ball while laying on the floor, hence why goalkeeper Gomes assumed that he had a free-kick to take.
