Houston Roughnecks Waive Two Cornerbacks, Sign Former Indiana Receiver

The Houston Roughnecks have waived cornerbacks Nick Grant and Shahman Moore while signing wide receiver Whop Philyor on Thursday.

The Houston Roughnecks were the only UFL team to make moves on Thursday as they waived two cornerbacks and signed a wide receiver. Nick Grant and Shahman Moore are no longer on the team, but former Indiana pass catcher Whop Philyor was added to the roster.

Grant’s release comes as a surprise after starting nine games for the Houston Gamblers in the USFL last year. He made 28 tackles during the 2023 season. During his five seasons with Virginia, Grant made 138 tackles, 24 pass deflections, six tackles for loss, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, one touchdown and 0.5 sacks in 59 games.

Moore had previously signed his letter of intent with the XFL in October with the Orlando Guardians. He played his college ball at El Camino Community College, Washington State and West Florida. In 2021 with West Florida, Moore made 15 tackles and one pass deflection in 10 games.

Philynor spent time last year playing in the USFL for the Michigan Panthers. He was one the Minnesota Vikings roster in 2021. Philynor also left Indiana fourth in career receptions (180) and ninth in career receiving yards (2,067), adding 12 touchdowns in 38 games. His best season came in 2019 when he caught 70 passes for 1,002 yards and five scores.

The Roughnecks open the season at home on March 31 against the Memphis Showboats.
