Illinois boys individual wrestling championships updates

The Illinois boys individual wrestling championships are underway at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Thursday's action included first-round matches in all three classes and quarterfinal matches for Class 1A and 2A. The 3A quarterfinal matches were held on Friday morning and semifinal matches for all three classes were set for Friday night.

CLASS 3A QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

106 pounds: Rocco Cassioppi (Hononegah), Jamiel Castleberry (Proviso West), Caleb Noble (Warren) and Caden Correll (Normal) advanced to the semifinals.

Cassioppi, a freshman, defeated Sandburg junior Rocco Hayes with a 5-1 decision in one of the most anticipated matchups at the state championships. 

Hayes (46-2) and Cassioppi (43-3) are ranked sixth and seventh nationally in the SBLive rankings at 106 pounds. Hayes finished third in 3A at 106 pounds a year ago.

Noble (41-3) is ranked eighth in the SBLive national rankings. He will face Correll, who finished fifth at 106 in 3A a year ago as a sophomore, in the semifinals.

113 pounds: Dom Munaretto (St. Charles East), Bruno Cassioppi (Hononegah), Nicholas Garcia (Marmion Academy) and Maddox Garbis (Plainfield (North) advanced to the semifinals. 

Munaretto (47-2), who won the 3A title at 106 pounds a year ago as a freshman, is ranked fifth at 113 pounds in the SBLive national rankings. Garcia (44-7), who finished fourth at 106 pounds a year ago, is ranked 12th.

Mendoza (41-2), a junior, is ranked fourth at 126 pounds in the SBLive national rankings. He won the 3A championship at 113 pounds a year ago as a sophomore after winning the title at 106 pounds as a freshman in 2022.

132 pounds: Ben Davino (St. Charles East), Maksim Mukhamedaliyev (Hersey), Damian Valdez (Addison Trail) and Thomas Silva (Hononegah) advanced to the semifinals.

Davino (48-0) is ranked first at 132 pounds in the SBLive national rankings. He won the 3A title at 126 pounds a year ago as a junior and won the 120-pound championship as a sophomore in 2022.

138 pounds: Zach Stewart (Marmion Academy), Ryan Hinger (Sandburg), Donavon Allen (Marist) and Justin Wardlow (Lockport) advanced to the semifinals.

Stewart, a sophomore, won by injury default over St. Charles East senior Tyler Guerra. Guerra (46-2) finished second at 138 pounds a year ago and is ranked 10th at 138 pounds in the SBLive national rankings.

144 pounds: Jayden Colon (St. Charles East), Carson Weber (Joliet (West), Aidan Huck (Batavia) and Evan Gosz (Fremd) advanced to the semifinals.

Colon (39-5), a senior, won the 3A championship at 145 pounds last year after winning the 2A title at 145 as a sophomore in 2022. Gosz is undefeated this season with a 36-0 record.

150 pounds: Will Denny (Marist), Gavin Connolly (St. Charles East), Rhenzo Augusto (Barrington) and Jack Ferguson (Yorkville) advanced to the semifinals.

Denny (40-4), a junior, is ranked 11th at 150 pounds in the SBLive national rankings.

157 pounds: Aaron Stewart (Warren), Noah Quintana (West Aurora), Brody Sendele (Hononegah) and Edmund Enright (Mt. Carmel) advanced to the semifinals.

Stewart (40-2), a sophomore, is ranked 10th in the SBLive national rankings at 157 pounds, while Enright (37-3) is ranked 20th. Enright, a senior, finished second at 152 pounds a year ago while Stewart finished third.

165 pounds: Gunnar Garelli (Lyons), Anthony Gutierrez (St. Charles (East), Collin Carrigan (Glenbard West) and Jacob Luce (DeKalb) advanced to the semifinals. 

Garelli (45-2), a senior who finished fourth at 160 pounds a year ago, defeated Quincy senior Owen Uppinghouse (53-1) with a 5-1 decision. Uppinghouse finished third at 160 pounds a year ago. 

Garelli is ranked 22nd in the SBLive national rankings at 165 pounds, in the quarterfinals. 

Carrigan, a senior, is ranked 21st in the SBLive national rankings.

175 pounds: Ricky Ericksen (Marist), Matt Kubas (Libertyville), Brody Murray (St. Charles East) and Colin Kelly (Mt. Carmel) advanced to the semifinals. 

Ericksen, a junior, improved to 30-10 with an 8-5 decision over Yorkville junior Luke Zook. Zook (46-5) finished third at 170 pounds a year ago as a sophomore.

Kelly (41-1), who finished second at 170 pounds a year ago after winning the title at 160 pounds as a sophomore in 2022, is ranked sixth in the SBLive national rankings at 175 pounds. 

190 pounds: Jaxon Penovich (Prospect), Matt Lapacek (Downers Grove South), Quinn Herbert (Loyola Academy) and Nico Ronchetti (Joliet Catholic) advanced to the semifinals. 

Penovich (44-3), a sophomore, finished fifth at 195 pounds a year ago as a freshman.

Herbert (31-8), a senior, won by major decision (14-4) against Marist's Conor Phelan (37-10), who finished third at 182 pounds a year ago. 

215 pounds: Nicolas Besteiro (Naperville Central), Joseph Favia (Marmion Academy), Cooper Caraway (Normal) and Kai Calcutt (Loyola Academy) advanced to the semifinals. 

Calcutt, a sophomore, defeated Yorkville's Ben Alvarez with a fall (6:00) in a rematch of last year's championship match at 220 pounds that was won by Alvarez. Calcutt improved to 29-4. Alvarez fell to 44-6.

Caraway (45-3), a senior, finished sixth at 220 pounds a year ago.

285 pounds: Dillan Johnson (Joliet Catholic), Abisai Hernandez (Mundelein), Jonathan Rulo (Belleville (East) and Marko Ivanisevic (Hinsdale Central) advanced to the semifinals. 

Johnson (37-1), a senior who will play football and wrestle at the University of Wisconsin, is seeking his third state championship in three seasons. He won the 2A title at 285 pounds the past two seasons and is ranked second in the SBLive national rankings.

Rulo, a sophomore, is undefeated at 34-0 this season after finishing second in 3A at 285 pounds a year ago. 

Ivanisevic (39-2), a senior, finished fifth at 220 pounds the past two years. He defeated Joliet West senior Wyatt Schmitt (34-3), who finished fourth at 285 pounds last year, in a tiebreaker to advance.
