Form held for the most part through Saturday’s first two rounds of the Class 6A state wrestling championships at Sandy High School.
The top four seeds advanced to this morning’s quarterfinals in 11 of 14 weight classes.
Only three top-four seeds lost on Day 1 of the tournament, including two in a loaded 160-pound bracket. Sherwood senior Seth Glenn ousted No. 2 seed Ryan Johnston of Grants Pass 6-4, while Mountain View sophomore Liam Byrne knocked off No. 3 Abraham Dejesus of Reynolds 5-2.
That left No. 5 Cougar Friesen of Newberg the highest seed remaining in the bottom half of the draw. Top seed Price Pothier eased into the quarterfinals with a 50-second pin of Cleveland’s Daniel Passmore.
At 285, McNary senior Anthony Cruz Lopez bounced No. 4 Nomani Liu of Southridge with an 8-3 decision.
At 120, the top three made it through, with No. 4 Mark Astry, a Grants Pass sophomore, having to drop out of the bracket.
Two-time defending champion Newberg raced to an early lead in the team standings. The Tigers amassed 120.5 points through two rounds, with Sprague (78.5), Roseburg (68) and West Linn (68) their closest pursuers.
