Ron Washington Praises Young Angels Pitcher Off to Hot Start This Season

The Los Angeles Angels have been playing some good baseball of late, in part due to the performance of starting pitcher Reid Detmers. Detmers has made two starts this season, but he is looking special so far.

The left-hander has pitched 11 innings in his two outings, pitting up an ERA of 1.64. He has struck out 19 batters during that time, including mowing down 12 members of the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

His manager, Ron Washington, praised the young starter for his start to the season. Washington knows how crucial starting pitching is to the success of the Angels this year, so he has been glad to see Detmers step up.

“The best thing I like about him is his poise,” manager Ron Washington said. “He’s as poised as they get and his confidence is sky high. The thing that I like is he’s using all parts of the strike zone.”

Detmers had a great rookie season but came back down to earth last season. He is looking very similar to how he did in his rookie year and the hope is that he can keep this level of performance up the rest of the way. He is extremely confident in his game right now, which is leading to lucrative results on the field.

“You just have to keep it going and keep your confidence high,” said Detmers, who has 19 strikeouts in 11 innings. “Obviously there’s going to be ups and downs but I came into this year just telling myself, ‘You’ve got around 32 starts so just move on to the next.’ That’s kind of my mindset this year and so far it’s gone pretty well.”

If Detmers can keep this level up, the Angels will have something special brewing. The team has been playing better than many thought they would already and they want to keep the good times going.
