Angels Injury News: Anthony Rendon's Season Effectively Over

Phil Nevin's announcement wasn't exactly a surprise.

The Angels finally announced that third baseman Anthony Rendon will officially not return to the field in the 2023 season.

Rendon injured his leg July 4, with the team failing to properly disclose the specifics of Rendon's long-term status. Manager Phil Nevin said Saturday that the veteran will miss the season with a fractured tibia.

Rendon batted .236 in 43 games this season, adding two home runs and 22 RBIs. Rendon has yet to play more than 60 games for the Angels in his four seasons with the team. He signed a seven-year, $245 million deal with LA before the 2020 season.

Despite fans' disappointment in the expensive player, Rendon recently expressed his desire to stay in Anaheim.

Rendon's injury came under much scrutiny, as it wasn't revealed that the 33-year-old had fractured his tibia until last week. Previously, team doctors had suggested it was merely a bone bruise. Reporters questioned why the Angels had not announced the injury sooner and Rendon said "you gotta ask them."

Rendon's best year came the season before he signed with the Angels. In 146 games Rendon batted .319/.412/.598 with 34 home runs and 126 RBIs in the Nationals' World Series Championship season.

With the Angels' season effectively over, the front office likely does not want to push Rendon beyond his physical capabilities as they prepare for the offseason.
