Angels Lose Recently DFA'd Infielder to NL Central Squad

The young journeyman is heading back to the NL Central.

The Los Angeles Angels designated first baseman/outfielder, Alfonso Rivas, for assignment last week. It didn't take long for him to find a new team.

On Monday, Rivas was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Angels' public relations team reported the news on X/Twitter.

The Halos DFA'd Rivas last week to make room on the 40-man roster for reliever Robert Stephenson. The 27-year-old was initially claimed off waivers a month ago by the Angels, but didn't last long in the Halos' organization.

Rivas has slashed .243/.324/.349 over parts of three major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He had a quick stay with the Angels, and will now head to the St. Louis Cardinals, hoping to latch on for a longer stay.

In 2023, Rivas slashed .229/.303/.422 with three home runs and 15 runs batted in. He's shown signs of promise throughout his career, but hasn't gotten enough opportunities to find a long-term home.
