Angels News: Chase Silseth's Move to Minor League Part of Phil Nevin's Master Plan
After becoming the first player from the 2021 MLB Draft to lace up for a major league game, pitcher Chase Silseth is headed back to Triple-A.
Silseth posted a 5.30 ERA in 18-2/3 innings after making his MLB debut in May 2022, in which he allowed just one hit in a six inning appearance.
When the Angels brought him back up in April, Silseth delivered such strong relief performances that Nevin determined that there might be a permanent place for him in the bullpen.
"Going forward, I can see him pitching big, late outs," Nevin said.

Nevin's tone has changed, as Silseth has floundered in relief appearances as of late. In his last three visits to the mound, Silseth has allowed a total of 6 hits and 4 runs in just 5 innings. Now, the Angels are sending him back down to Triple-A to once more work as a starting pitcher.
"I just think (Silseth) is best suited in the starting rotation," Nevin said. "It was something we tried. With the arms we've added down there, not sure the innings were going to be quite what we thought they were at the beginning."

In place of Silseth, Ben Joyce and Sam Bachman have shown promise in relief spots. Joyce had yet to let up a run all season until last nights 2 ER performance against the Houston Astros. Bachman has allowed just one run in 5 innings, tallying on 4 strikeouts in the process.
With the bones of an effective bullpen in place, the Silseth experiment could be over. Nevin hopes that more time in the minors will allow the pitcher to rebound as a starter.
"I think this is best for him. As an organization, we feel like it's best for Chase to go back down and start. I'm sure we'll see him again," Nevin said.
