Angels News: Halos Officially Hires 2 New Coaches on Ron Washington's Staff

The Angels added two new coaches as the Washington era begins.

The Los Angeles Angels are likely in a full rebuild — at least where their coaching staff is concerned.

After firing manager Phil Nevin, Angels owner Arte Moreno hired Ron Washington, 71, who resigned from the Texas Rangers in 2014 and hasn't managed a team since. He spent the past seven seasons as a third-base coach in Atlanta and was known and beloved for his quick wit and old-school techniques. Washinton told The Associated Press that he was "lost for words" and ready to get to work.

Washington made two hires Saturday as Eric Young Sr. and Ryan Goins are planning on joining his staff, according to Jon Heyman of the NY Post.

Young was hired by the Atlanta Braves in 2018 and had a strong professional career. He hit a home run in Colorado Rockies' first-ever home at bat and brought the Rockies to their first postseason appearance in 1995.

Goins will be making his debut as an infield coach for the Angels after being released by the Kansas City Royals after signing a minor league deal before the 2023 season. Goins was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and made his first big league start in 2013.

Plenty of change is coming the Angels' way as star hitter and pitcher Shohei Ohtani is likely to walk in free agency unless Moreno is able to convince the future $500+ million dollar man that he is best suited to win in Anaheim. For a team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2014, it could be a difficult pitch to sell.
