Angels News: Halos Sign 19-Year-Old Cuban Pitching Prospect

The young prospect is already throwing 95 mph fastballs.

The Los Angeles Angels have a few major questions awaiting them once the season (mercifully) comes to an end. As there is essentially no world in which the Halos make the postseason, their focus will shift to re-signing Shohei Ohtani — who could walk in free agency — and decide whether to trade Mike Trout, who has seven years remaining on his contract and could want out of Anaheim.

Tough conversations are sure to come for the Halos, who failed to make the postseason after a concerted effort to bolster their roster at the trade deadline. However, the beautiful thing about baseball is that you never know when you've hit the jackpot on a prospect who could change your ball club for the better.

Maybe that's what the Angels did by signing right-handed pitcher Jan Carlos Hechavarria, a Cuban-born player who came to the U.S. in 2019. The young prospect is just 19 years old but is already throwing 92-95 MPH fastballs.

There is little statistical information available about Hechavarria, but he will presumably begin in the Angels' farm system next season. We can't wait to see what he can do!
