The Los Angeles Angels dealt with a ton of injuries during the 2023 season, and it hurt them on the field. But there were also a few players in their organization who they were hoping to return from long stints of being hurt.

One of those players that the Angels would have loved to see back this season was right-hander Chris Rodriguez. He hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2021 due to injury, and he suffered a setback during his recovery this season.

“Right-hander Chris Rodriguez had a setback in September because of a back issue. Rodriguez battled back problems throughout his minor-league career, and he was finally healthy enough to reach the majors in 2021. In August 2021, he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery that kept him out until 2023. He had made it all the back to pitch in Triple-A late this season before the back issues returned.”

Per The OC Register

There was hope Rodriguez could have returned this season, but his setback halted all of that. Additionally, the Angels standing in the playoff race almost didn’t make too much sense to force anything. So, he will take this offseason to rehab and see what happens to possibly return next year.

“It’s something he’ll continue to rehab with, and we’ll see how it goes,” Minasian said.

If the Halos can get him back, it would be a great story. He has only played in 15 games throughout his big league career, and the Angels are hoping to see more of him next season.

He holds a career ERA of 3.64 and a WHIP of 1.45. Rodriguez has also struck out 29 batters over 29.2 innings of work. There isn’t a large sample size, but he is still only 25 years old, so there is plenty of room to grow and get his career back on track.

The hope is that he doesn’t suffer another setback and that he can return to the mound. We all wish him luck over the offseason as he rehabs his injury.
