The Angels were unable to overcome an early deficit in its loss to the Mariners Thursday night. From the first pitch, the Halos were playing behind the entire game.

The poor start could be tracked back to Reid Detmers who started the game. Halos manager Phil Nevin was not happy with his pitcher's performance.

Through four innings of work, Detmers gave up nine hits and seven earned runs. It was the most runs the 24-year-old has surrendered this season.

After the game, Nevin spoke about what went wrong and why he is concerned for the lefty.

“He’s been in a little bit of a funk right now,” Nevin said. “The alarming thing for me was the velocity was a little down. With the bullpen situation, we were trying to get every out out of him. He’s going through a tough time. It’s a learning process and he’s really young, but he has too good of stuff to get hit like that.” (Via MLB.com)

Despite throwing a no-hitter in his rookie season last year, Detmers has struggled since then.

Through 20 starts he has a 2-8 record with a 4.78 ERA. In July he had a 6.12 ERA in five starts. His WHIP was always way above one last month.

He has been a part of the recent trend of Angels starters struggling. Over the past week, the team has been unable to get quality starts out of its pitchers.

This has led to the team's poor 0-4 record since the trade deadline.

If the Angels want to make a serious push for the playoffs, its pitching is going to need to turn around and that starts with Detmers.
