Angels News: Phil Nevin Releases Statement Following Conclusion of Halos Tenure

The former manager was fired after just two seasons in Anaheim.

After a disappointing 2023 season, marred with injuries to stars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani — as well as other key players — Angels owner Arte Moreno let go of manager Phil Nevin.

Nevin had spent one and a half seasons with the Angels and had a 119-149 record and zero playoff appearances.

Nevin, a former first baseman, released a statement following his release from the club.

"I want to take this time to thank [general manager] Perry [Minasian] and the Moreno family for giving me the opportunity to manage my hometown team. Growing up just down the road from Angel Stadium and being here through my days at Cal State Fullerton, I've said it many times, it was a dream job for me and that will never change," the statement began.

The Angels are facing many question marks going into the offseason, namely the future of two-way player Ohtani, who excelled as both a hitter and pitcher this season before suffering a tear in his UCL and undergoing Tommy John surgery — keeping him off the mound for at least a year.

Moreno has yet to hire a new manager and Minasian said that the team is in the process of analyzing the rest of the coaching and training staff as well as the front office.

"When you have certain expectations and you don't meet those expectations, you make changes," Minasian said in a press conference Tuesday. "Does that mean Phil is to blame? He's not. No, it's all of us. Me, first and foremost. I have to do a better job putting this club together."

The Angels' first step in putting the club together will likely be centered around what Ohtani ultimately decides.
