USA Today Predicts J.D. Martinez to Land With Angels

Could the Halos land this elite DH?

The Los Angeles Angels have been relatively low-key players this offseason, but the winds of change may be blowing their way with a potentially significant signing.

According to MLB reporter Gabe Lacques from USA Today, there's reason to believe the Halos will sign three-time Silver Slugger winner J.D. Martinez.

Martinez is coming off an outstanding season with the Dodgers in 2023, marking his best performance since 2021.

In his first (and likely only) year with the Dodgers, Martinez anchored a stout lineup, recording 103 RBIs — his highest since 2019. He also launched 33 home runs, batted .271, and boasted an impressive slugging percentage of .572.

An experienced designated hitter like Martinez could undoubtedly bring a positive impact to the Angels' lineup in 2024, especially considering the departure of Shohei Ohtani. Over a 13-year career, Martinez has developed a reputation for being a positive influence on his teammates, helping them improve their game in the batter's box.

The Angels find themselves in need of additional offensive firepower, particularly beyond the contributions of Mike Trout. With Martinez still showcasing his hitting prowess, even at 36 years old, he could potentially become one of the Angels' standout players and significantly strengthen their offense.

Financially, the Angels seem well-positioned to make a move, with a reported $50 million to spend before incurring a competitive balance tax. Martinez earned $10 million in 2023. If he is seeking a more lucrative deal this off-season, the Angels have the financial flexibility to accommodate such negotiations.

Given the potential impact Martinez could have on their lineup, the Angels might be wise to invest in his services.

As the offseason unfolds, all eyes are on Perry Minasian and the Angels' front office to see if they will indeed pull the trigger on another hitter to boost their lineup. In a relatively weak free agent group, Martinez stands out.
