The Houston Astros signed Jose Altuve to a five-year contract extension on Tuesday, marking his third extension with the club. Altuve is arguably the greatest player in Astros history and will go down as perhaps the best second baseman that's ever played the game.

His new deal will start in 2025 and is worth $125 million, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

The team's success can't be ignored during his time with Houston. Altuve is a major reason why the team has won the World Series twice and made it to the ALCS in seven straight seasons.

His individual success shows his impact. Altuve has been named an MVP, eight-time All-Star, six-time Silver-Slugger, and has three batting titles. There haven't been many players in baseball who have put that type of career together.

When speaking on the deal, Astros owner Jim Crane had the following to say, according to McTaggart.

"Altuve was here when I got here in 2011. We're the only two guys that have been here that long. Not only has he performed well, but to have him hopefully retire here is a big deal for the franchise, and I think it's a big deal for him and a big deal for the fans, more importantly."

As a fan favorite and someone who has constantly produced on the field, Crane understood the importance of extending him.

He dealt with injuries last season and played the fewest amount of games in his career, outside of the COVID-shortened season and his rookie year. To no surprise, he still slashed .311/.393/.522 with 17 home runs in the 90 games he played.

When thinking about the Astros, Altuve is one of the first players that come to mind. The 33-year-old has been a staple in this dynasty and will continue to be one through his age-39 season.
