Houston Astros in Active Extension Talks With Two Star Players

Houston Astros General Manager Dana Brown has stated that the club is in active extension talks with two of their key players.

New Houston Astros manager Dana Brown has been very candid about who he hopes to extend in the coming months. Starter Cristian Javier was the first domino to fall, but players such as Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker, and Framber Valdez are all on the docket.

In fact, the latter two are in active extension talks with the Astros according to Brown. Speaking with Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle on Sunday, Brown mentioned that the club is in contact with both players' agents and felt "optimistic" about getting a deal done.

However, the caveat is that deals would need to get done before Opening Day others they would be shelved. This is presumably to avoid any type of distraction in season. Some teams operate this way, while others such as the Chicago Cubs do not give a firm deadline for extensions.

Both players are under contract through the 2025 MLB season, so there isn't as much urgency to get it done. However, the earlier they can get it done and buy out the remaining arbitration years, the more the franchise can save on the backend of the deal.

It is a classic Dana Brown contract maneuver.
