Takeaways: Braves drop second game against Cardinals

A sixth and seventh-inning push was not enough for the Braves to come all the way back.

The Atlanta Braves' struggles against the St. Louis Cardinals continue as they drop the second game of the series in a (insert) loss.

The Braves did not go down quietly, however, as they made a strong effort to get back into the game in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Cardinals' lead was ultimately too much to handle as the Braves were unable to get anything going at the plate early.

Spencer Strider clearly had an off-night

Spencer Strider has been a reliable piece of the Braves' rotation this season.

He is 16-4 with a 3.56 ERA and leads the MLB in strikeouts with 245.

Tonight did not go as planned for Strider, however, as he only lasted 2.2 innings and allowed six runs off of six hits.

Strider will bounce back and help the Braves navigate the postseason.

Plate production needs to start earlier

The Braves did not put any runs across the plate until the fourth inning. They did not get any more consistent production until the sixth.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals scored early and often, starting in the first inning and never looking back.

That is not a trend the Braves want to see continue.

The Braves do not give up

It looked bleak, but the Braves never quit. They made it a two-run game in the seventh inning, but the comeback fell short.

Nonetheless, Atlanta did not give up. That kind of effort will pay dividends for the Braves in the postseason.

Tomorrow

The Braves will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow at 7:20 p.m. ET/6:20 p.m. ET. Max Fried is on the mound for the Braves and Adam Wainwright will handle starting duties for St. Louis. The game will be televised on Bally Sports Southeast.
