The end of the Yonny Chirinos experiment
The Atlanta Braves picked up Yonny Chirinos off of waivers after the Tampa Bay Rays designated him for assignment earlier this season. The Braves picked him up in hopes that he could eat up a few starts while Max Fried and Kyle Wright recovered from injuries. Fried has finally returned and although we are still waiting on Wright to return, I think Chirinos' time is up in Atlanta.
Chirinos made four starts for the Braves and finished with a 1-1 record after giving up six runs to the Mets in his start today. That ran his ERA up to 9.33 with 18 strikeouts and six walks. You can't give up an average of nine runs a game and expect to still be with a team that has World Series aspirations.
Allan Winans has made two starts for the Braves and has a 1-0 record with a 1.59 ERA. Sure, he hasn't been perfect, but he has got the job done in both of his starts. I'd love to see him get another start. That still leaves one spot open in the pitching rotation. Who would take that spot?
Atlanta can go back to the well of maple syrup with Michael Soroka. Soroka started for Gwinnett last night and pitched seven innings as he allowed zero runs on three hits, eight strikeouts, and one walk. I'd say throw Soroka back in the rotation for a while and see if he sticks. Wright is not expected to be back until late September and maybe early October. Until then, I think we can experiment with Winans and Soroka.
