BREAKING: Ron Washington to leave Braves; take Angels managerial job

The Braves third base coach is getting another chance to manage at the Major League level

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman has reported that Atlanta Braves third-base coach Ron Washington will be leaving Atlanta for the open managerial job with the Los Angeles Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels have yet to confirm the news.

EDIT: Both the Angels and the Braves have confirmed the hire, with Wash receiving a two-year deal.

Washington, 71, has served as the Atlanta Braves third base coach since 2017. He's reportedly been interested in getting back into managing, and has finally found his opportunity.

Washington was the manager of the Texas Rangers from 2007-2014, twice winning the AL Pennant. Despite a 664-611 record and five winning seasons in his eight years there, Washington abruptly announced his retirement in early September of 2014, citing personal reasons. He later admitted to an extramarital affair, and expressed a desire to reconcile with his family.

Under Washington, Atlanta's infield defense has been regarded as some of the best in Major League Baseball. Known as "fungo royalty", Washington is famous across baseball for his intensive and frequent infield defensive sessions.

With Washington's departure, the Braves will be looking for a new third base coach. The Braves have had one of the most consistent coaching staffs under manager Brian Snitker, with very few departures from the assistant ranks.
