Lineups, how to watch Atlanta's doubleheader against the Washington Nationals on Sunday

Ronald Acuña Jr is out of the lineup for game two as Spencer Strider guns for the Atlanta Braves modern-day strikeout record, held by John Smoltz

Let's play two!

The Atlanta Braves take on the Washington Nationals in a doubleheader today from DC, making up a game lost Saturday to Tropical Storm Ophelia. And if the weather doesn't cooperate to get two games in on Sunday, no worries - these same two teams have a series in Atlanta this upcoming weekend, and you can always make one up there.

Lineups for the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, September 24th

Here's how the Braves will line up for game one, at 1:35 PM ET:

Atlanta's getting some regulars rest in this one, with Luke Williams getting his first career start in Atlanta, playing 3rd base and batting 9th, while Nickly Lopez is at shortstop for Orlando Arcia, batting 8th. Ronald Acuña Jr is in the lineup, but only as DH, while Kevin Pillar plays right field and bats 7th. Sean Murphy is at catcher, batting 5th

Here's how the Braves will line up for game two, at 6:35 PM ET:

Atlanta's continuing to shuffle the lineup and give regulars some time off, with Ronald Acuña Jr out of the lineup. Forrest Wall is in left field (batting 9th) and Kevin Pillar is in right field (batting 8th), with Orlando Arcia checking back in at shortstop and the #7 spot. Travis d'Arnaud is the game two catcher, batting 6th.

Pitching Matchups for the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals on Sunday, September 24th

Game One:

Starting game one for Atlanta is newly recalled Allan Winans. 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in his 4 major league starts for the Braves, the 28 year-old has struck out 26 batters in his 22 innings of work. A changeup specialist, Winans works off of location and sequencing, with a fastball that barely reaches 90 mph but is still effective when deployed correctly. He's 9-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 23 outings (17 starts) for AAA Gwinnett, with 113 strikeouts in 126.1 innings.

The announced starter for Washington in game one is Jackson Rutledge. One of Washington's top pitching prospects, the righty's made two major league starts and is 0-1 with a 8.10 ERA. His debut was, objectively, a disaster: seven runs on ten hits in just 3.2 innings against Pittsburgh. He got a no-decision last week against the White Sox, pitching 6.1 innings of six hit, two run baseball. The takeaways are that the big righty (6-8, 251 lbs) is not walking many batters - two combined in both starts - but also not striking out many, with only four strikeouts in his ten innings and three homers allowed. In the minors this year, divided between AA Harrisburg and AAA Rochester, he was 8-4 with a 3.71 ERA and 8.0 K/9.

Game Two:

Starting for Atlanta in game two is Spencer Strider. 18-5 with a 3.73 ERA in his 30 starts, the righty is one of the most dominant strikeout pitchers in major league baseball, with a league leading 270 strikeouts at a league leading 13.8 K/9 rate. He's only six strikeouts away from tying 1996 John Smoltz for the Atlanta single season strikeout record, and could potentially break that in tonight's game two. Strider's 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against Washington, with 27 strikeouts in 19 innings.

The announced starter for Washington in game two is RHP Joan Adon. 2-3 with a 6.28 ERA in his ten games (eight starts), he's struck out 38 and walked 18 in his 43 innings. He's never faced Atlanta in his 25 game career, and no active member of the Braves roster has an at-bat against him.
