What is the significance of the Braves sweeping the Yankees?

The New York Yankees have had the Braves number for what seems like forever, but Atlanta swept the Bronx Bombers this week. What exactly does that mean for the history of the Braves franchise?

The New York Yankees are the most storied franchise in professional sports.

Countless legends such as Babe Ruth, Roger Maris and Derek Jeter have helped the Yankees earn their 27 World Series Championships.

And historically, the Atlanta Braves have not had much luck against the Yankees. The Yankees control the all-time regular season series between the two teams 26-19 and the all-time postseason series 15-9.

The Braves managed to win the 1957 World Series against the Yankees in seven games. Aside from that, the two clubs meeting in the Fall Classic has been bad news for the Braves:

In 1958 the Yankees beat the Braves in seven games to claim their 18th World Series title.

1996 is perhaps the worst memory for Braves fans as the team took a 2-0 series lead in Yankee Stadium just go drop four straight games and hand the Yankees their 23rd World Series crown.

1999 was the last time the two teams met in the World Series and the Braves got swept.

This week the Braves earned a three-game sweep over the Yankees, marking the first time Atlanta has ever swept them

Sweeping the Yankees represents a monumental accomplishment as the Braves continue to become one of the MLB's most popular franchises.

The sweep by Atlanta put the Yankees' record below .500, and this is the latest in the season the Yankees have had a losing record since 1995. Nine players on the Yankees' active roster had not been born yet.

A new era has begun for Braves baseball and it gained even more momentum this week.
