St. Louis Cardinals fans will have to wait a little longer before seeing the club's top pitcher in action.

The Cardinals have been without the services of ace Sonny Gray so far this season as he has dealt with a hamstring injury. Gray suffered the injury in Spring Training and has been recovering ever since.

On the bright side, the injury won't make him miss much more time. Gray is nearing a return, but his Cardinals debut already has been pushed back multiple times and has been moved again, according to MLB.com's John Denton.

"Cardinals (right-handed pitcher) Sonny Gray will pitch a simulated game in Springfield, Mo., on Wednesday," Denton said. "He will throw approximately 50 pitches. Then, after attending Opening Day at Busch Stadium, he will throw 70 pitches for the (Memphis Redbirds) next Tuesday. His STL debut pushed back again."

Although he suffered the injury in Spring Training, there was some speculation that he could return in the club's first series of the season. That didn't end up being the case and there was some speculation that he could make his first start on Tuesday, April 9.

Now it seems like he will be pitching for Memphis on that date. If all goes smoothly, his debut could come around mid-April. Unfortunately, his debut has been changed a few times, but the most important thing certainly is his health.

Gray is going to play a massive role with the Cardinals and if he were to miss extended time because he comes back too quickly and re-aggravates the injury, that would be devastating.

Hopefully, all goes well in his rehabilitation and he's able to return to full strength soon.
