Cardinals Reportedly Checked In On Star Pitcher In Free Agency; Could Move Be Coming?

The Cardinals may not be done adding starting pitchers yet

The St. Louis Cardinals have been extremely busy in free agency but they may not be done yet.

St. Louis has been the most active team in baseball in the starting pitching market. The Cardinals already have added three new starters in Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson. If the 2024 season were to start tomorrow, St. Louis already would be a better team on paper. Although this is the case, more moves could be on the horizon.

If the Cardinals were to make another addition, it likely would be through the trade market. This may be the case, but St. Louis still be an intriguing option in free agency, as well. St. Louis still has plenty of money and could land one of the top arms available. St. Louis even reportedly has checked in on former Cardinals hurlers Jordan Montgomery, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"The champion Rangers are the obvious fit after (Jordan Montgomery) thrived vs. rival Houston in the ALCS (1.29 ERA), helping them win," Heyman said. "The (New York Mets), (Boston Red Sox), and previous employers Cardinals and (New York Yankees) all checked in."

St. Louis has been linked to Montgomery on multiple occasions. It's unclear if the Cardinals checked in with him before landing other starters in free agency or after the addition of Gray but it certainly is interesting. St. Louis already has improved but if it could bring Montgomery back into the fold it would just help the club even more. The rotation was the club's biggest fault in 2023 but it sounds like they really are trying to improve it this offseason.
