Cardinals Star Unable To Reach Agreement With Club; Will Settle In Arbitration

St. Louis' utility man is cut short on a deal

The St. Louis Cardinals are preparing to bounce back in 2024 after posting one of their worst records in franchise history last season.

After adding three proven starting pitchers and bullpen depth, along with sorting through arbitration figures -- the Cardinals look just about ready for Opening Day.

Unfortunately, St. Louis was unable to reach an agreement with one of their key players for next season -- forcing the negotiation to be settled in arbitration.

"Tommy Edman has filed for $6.95 million, while the Cardinals countered at $6.5 million," MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported Thursday.

With such a small margin of capital being held back by St. Louis, it's surprising to see the franchise defer to arbitration -- considering Edman is projected to be the club's starting center fielder next season.

Edman batted .248 with 42 extra-base hits including 13 home runs, 47 RBIs, and .706 OPS in 137 games played for the Cardinals in 2023.

The 28-year-old's ability to man multiple positions while also putting up consistent production at the plate makes Edman a vital asset to St. Louis' roster.

It's tough to imagine why the Cardinals would hold out on less than a half million dollars for a player who's proven his worth.

Perhaps this will lead to a contract extension with the utility man -- barring bad blood between Edman and the Cardinals organization.
