Cardinals Star Underwent Surgery Earlier In Offseason For Nagging Injury

St. Louis' utility man is poised to bounce back from an injury

The St. Louis Cardinals are going to need all the help they can get to bounce back from their tumultuous 2023 season.

The Cardinals have filled pitching voids this winter and are continuously looking for ways to improve their chances next season while maintaining the weapons they already have.

The organization is confident that an important piece of the puzzle will be available despite having surgery this offseason.

"(Cardinals) utility ace Tommy Edman, who is slated to open the season as the club’s starting center fielder, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist in October," MLB.com's John Denton reported on Thursday per Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. "The Cards are confident that Edman will be ready for spring training."

"Edman missed three weeks in July with tendon inflammation in the wrist. When pain and stiffness lingered throughout the rest of the season, Edman opted for arthroscopic surgery in October. The wrist should be healed by the Feb. 12 opening of spring training"

Edman batted .248 with 42 extra-base hits including 13 home runs, 47 RBIs, and .706 OPS in 137 games played for the Cardinals in 2023.

The 28-year-old's fielding versatility is essential for St. Louis' defense as he manned the positions of shortstop, second base, center field, and right field last season.

Losing Edman to injury would have been a major blow to the Cardinals' efforts next season so it's good news to hear that the utility man's projected to be ready to go for spring training.
