The Chicago Cubs made a bold statement on Tuesday with a resounding 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field.

Justin Steele picked up his fourth straight win by pitching into the sixth inning and keeping the Padres’ potent lineup off balance.

The Cubs (13-9) had seven hits, four by red hot Yan Gomes. Over Gomes’ last eight games, he’s hitting .441 – 15-for-34 with four home runs and nine RBI.

On a cold and windy night, Steele struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings.

In the eighth inning, the Cubs pulled away as Gomes hit an RBI single and Nico Hoerner cleared the bases with a clutch triple.

The Cubs’ pitching staff limited the Padres to five total hits. The Padres went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left a whopping 10 runners on base.

Four Chicago relief pitchers combined to limit the Padres to two hits over 3 2/3 innings.

When it was over, the Cubs recorded their fifth shutout through 22 games for the first time since 1969, tying a modern franchise record.
