It was a long, drawn out road that finally led the Chicago Cubs and Cody Bellinger to reunite with each other this offseason.

No matter how long it took, it doesn't matter now as the Cubs have their superstar back on the roster, ready to provide the versatile defense and recovered hitting ability he showcased in 2023.

This was huge for the franchise.

The front office talked about chasing stars before the winter began and they really had whiffed on all their targets before finally getting Bellinger back into the mix.

For a team planning on contending, they needed to have this star power.

But, that almost didn't happen.

Bellinger's agent, Scott Boras, suggested that the reigning Comeback Player of the Year had other options he was weighing before ultimately returning to Chicago.

"If you don't think Cody Bellinger had choices that were different than this ... The fact of the matter is we did a contract, in collaboration with Cody and his desires...," the superagent told Paul Sullivan of Chicago Tribune.

Whether that is a spin for Boras not landing his client the megadeal that he was searching ultimately doesn't matter.

Bellinger is a Cub for at least the upcoming season.

His three-year, $80 million deal comes with opt-outs after 2024 and 2025. If the star has another year like he put together with Chicago last season, there's a good chance he hits free agency again in search of that potential nine-figure contract.

Only time will tell if that's the case.

One thing is for certain, Bellinger enjoyed his time with the Cubs last year and he's happy to be back with the organization that played a major part in his career turnaround.

"When it was coming toward the end and everything was coming to light a little bit, this was definitely something I wanted and both sides agreed on," the slugger said.

Now, with him in camp, the question will now be when fans get to see him play.

Manager Craig Counsell isn't rushing him into anything, although Bellinger said he could be ready in a week if needed.

When his first action eventually does come is to be determined, but his first action for the upcoming season will be with Chicago.
