Chicago Cubs Ace Linked to Surprising AL Contender
Whether or not the Chicago Cubs decided to become sellers at the MLB trade deadline is still up in the air.
But contenders around the league hope they do as most want a chance at acquiring either Cody Bellinger or Marcus Stroman. Names like Kyle Hendricks and Mark Leiter Jr. have also drawn trade interest.
Stroman's name is the one that is brought up most when talking about trade scenarios involving the Cubs. With an opt out in his contract that he looks increasingly likely to utilize, Stroman is seen as a high-end rental ready to help any contending team. It is for that reason he is the most likely to be moved at the deadline.
One team who could be interested in acquiring his services are the Baltimore Orioles, a team that after years of mediocrity are poised to make noise in the postseason.
According to The Athletic, the Orioles should pursue Stroman is if available.
"The Orioles have the best record in the American League (62-38) and are buyers this year at the deadline." writes Jim Bowden. "They are focused on acquiring an impact starting pitcher and have been linked to all the best names who could be available, from Marcus Stroman to Lucas Giolito to Jack Flaherty, among others."
Baltimore have a plethora of high-end prospects that could be impact Major Leaguers, something Chicago will no doubt want in return for their ace. Adding Stroman would only strengthen the best team in the American League, what type of price can you put on a World Series?
That's a question that the Cubs will assuredly ask the Orioles in any negotiations involving the top starter in what is a very think market.
Whether or not Baltimore can stomach the cost is another story.
Chicago holds all the power in negotiations as they don't have to sell. But for the right price, they might just not be able to say no.
