Chicago Cubs Claim Infielder Off Waivers From Braves
The Chicago Cubs have claimed Rylan Bannon off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.
Bannon is a 26-year-old utility-man who was designated for assignment ahead of the Rule 5 Draft placement deadline. He plays both second and third base, but has only 15 Major League plate appearances with two hits.
Across both the Baltimore Orioles' and Atlanta Braves' Triple-A teams, Bannon slashed .249/.367/.421 with 13 home runs in 411 plate appearances.
He'll likely play no more than a depth role across the upper minors and potentially fill in for injured players, but infielders like Bannon go a long way in making the roster deeper.
With that claim, the Cubs 40-man roster now stands one spot away from full. This will probably prevent them from making any picks during the Rule 5 Draft as according to Jed Hoyer and Tom Ricketts themselves, the Cubs are primed for a busy off-season.
They'd like to avoid having to DFA any more players than they have to.
