The Chicago Cubs fell short as the San Diego Padres rallied for a 5-3 victory Wednesday at Wrigley Field.

The teams have split the first two games with the finale set for Thursday afternoon.

Fernando Tatis Jr. led the way for the Padres with two hits and three RBI, highlighted by a two-run single in the seventh inning.

Trey Mancini had a solid game for the Cubs (13-10) with a two-run home run and a single. Nico Hoerner, who has been firmly entrenched in the leadoff spot in the lineup, added an RBI single.

Hoerner’s hit temporarily put the Cubs ahead 3-2 in the fifth. But they were unable to hold on.

Cubs starter Drew Smyly – who nearly tossed a perfect game in his last outing – was strong again as he allowed four hits and two runs in five innings. Manager David Ross pulled Smyly after 89 pitches.

Brandon Hughes took the loss with one run surrendered in 2/3 of an inning.

Chicago will send Hayden Wesneski to the mound to oppose San Diego’s Seth Lugo on Thursday.
