The Chicago Cubs extended one of the bright, young stars in Nico Hoerner to a three-year contract extension on Monday evening.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the contract extension is three years and $35 million. Added, he's just the second homegrown player to receive a contract extension since 2011 (David Bote, 2019).

Hoerner, 25, was the Cubs' first-round pick, 24th overall, in 2018. Injuries hampered him in his first three seasons, but he generally remained healthy in 2022, posting a .281/.327/.410 slash line with ten home runs and 55 RBI.

He also played excellent defense as the team's everyday shortstop.

With the Dansby Swanson signing, Hoerner shifted to second base, giving the Cubs one of the best middle infields defensively.

The former missed a couple of games in Spring Training with bicep tightness and was held out of the lineup for precautionary reasons.

Hoerner returned to the lineup on Monday, going 1-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base and run scored.
