Chicago Cubs Pull Off Stunning Trade With Royals, Add Another Reliever

The Chicago Cubs have completed their second trade of the day by adding a relief pitcher from the Kansas City Royals.

The Chicago Cubs have announced that they have made another trade, their second of the day on Monday.

With the MLB trade deadline less than 24 hours away, the Cubs appear to be all in on acquiring new talent to help bolster their roster for a stretch run, one they hope turns into a postseason spot.

Chicago acquired right-handed pitcher Jose Cuas from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Nelson Velazquez the Cubs announced.

Cuas holds a career 4.08 ERA over the course of 79.1 innings pitched in two seasons. Both seasons have been with the Royals.

Velazquez has been a AAAA-type of player for Chicago. He has displayed some power but is seen more as a depth player to help fill roles when players go down with injury. He holds a .241/.313/.621 slashline at the MLB level this season over 29 at-bats in 13 games.

It's a small sample size but a healthy return for Kansas City.

Cuas will come in and help reinforce a beleaguered bullpen that needs middle relief help. It's a small move that could pay large dividends down the stretch for the Cubs without breaking the bank in terms of prospect capital.

A shrewd move from Chicago's front office as they continue adding reinforcements ahead of the trade deadline.
