Cubs Make Roster Cuts, Including Top Prospects

Of the many roster cuts made at the Cubs camp this Friday, two stand out.

Brennen Davis and Pete Crow-Armstrong are clearly part of the Chicago Cubs’ long-term plans.

For now, they need more time to develop.

Davis and Crow-Armstrong were among 10 players cut on Friday.

Davis, who was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, hit .231 (3-for-13) at spring training, but still isn’t quite ready. He had 178 at-bats last season because of lower-back surgery.

“All that matters with Brennen is health,” Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said of the 23-year-old Davis. “He looks great, playing great defense, running well. He just needs reps.”

The 20-year-old Crow-Armstrong was impressive in camp, especially defensively. Since Crow-Armstrong hasn’t competed above the High-A level, there was no need to rush him through the system.

“He’s got a bright future, but he has things to work on in the meantime,” Hoyer said.
