Cubs Viewed as Best Fit for Top Remaining Free Agent

The Chicago Cubs are viewed as an ideal fit for the top remaining free-agent slugger.

The Chicago Cubs offense heading into Spring Training isn't good enough to contend. While the front office made impressive moves with Shota Imanaga and Hector Neris, they've taken a step back offensively.

Jeimer Candelario signed with the Cincinnati Reds and Cody Bellinger hasn't decided on where he's going to play this season.

If they lose out on Bellinger, the offense looks even worse. Matt Chapman has been a name in rumors for the Cubs, but Bellinger is a necessity after the season he had last season.

The expectation seems to be him re-signing with Chicago. Whether that ends up happening or not remains to be seen as the two look to figure out a contract.

Jon Morosi of MLB.com confirmed the expectation, writing that there isn't a better fit than a reunion for Bellinger and the Cubs.

"I don't see a better fit than a reunion for Bellinger and the North Siders. The Cubs have flexibility at his two positions -- first base and center field -- and Bellinger found a home in Chicago after struggling mightily near the end of his tenure as a Dodger."

After winning the MVP in 2019, the left-handed Bellinger has had his fair share of struggles.

He got his career back on track last season in Chicago after slashing .307/.356/.525 with 26 home runs. The season he produced in 2023 was the Bellinger of the past, something baseball hadn't seen since that MVP season.

With a clear need for a hitter who can produce at a high level, it makes too much sense that both parties will reach an agreement.

The Cubs need him more than he does given their offense, so that could be part of the reason why a deal hasn't happened yet.

Scott Boras isn't afraid to hold out until his guys get the deal he's looking for and that won't change this time around.
