Scouts Buzzing About Chicago Cubs Top 100 Outfield Prospect
The Chicago Cubs have one of the best organizations in baseball.
One easy way to tell is to look back at the Cubs’ organizational all-stars from last season. Three of them made appearances in the Majors last season — outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, along with pitchers Jordan Wicks and Luke Little.
Crow-Armstrong could make the team as a fourth or fifth outfielder now that Cody Bellinger is back in the fold and set to play center field. Wicks could find a place in the starting rotation coming out of spring training. Little could play a role out of the bullpen.
But none of them are the prospect that scouts are buzzing about at spring training.
ESPN wrote a piece on the 10 prospects that are catching the eyes of baseball scouts now that spring training is a couple of weeks old. One of the Cubs made the list, and it just happens to be another prospect that was named to the team’s organizational all-stars last season.
That would be outfielder Owen Caissie.
He was part of the deal that sent Yu Darvish to San Diego. He’s not quite ready for prime time yet, but he isn’t quite 21 years old and he reached Double-A Tennessee last season.
Caissie is one of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects entering this season. With the Tennessee Smokies he batted .289 with 22 home runs and 84 RBI. He was named the Cubs’ Hitting Prospect of the Year and played with Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
Per ESPN, scouts love two things about Caissie — his power and his good decisions at the plate.
But, for now, he’ll likely remain in the minors. The Cubs have a logjam of quality outfielders, with Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki and Bellinger, along with Crow-Armstrong.
He will likely start the season at Triple-A Iowa and be on call if the Cubs have an injury issue. And if he gets that call, his makeup will put him in a position to help right away.
