Chicago Cubs Stars Make Top 10 Right Now List

The Chicago Cubs' double-play duo took its place among the best players in baseball at their position.

What did we learn from MLB.com and MLB Network’s Top 10 Right Now series? It really likes the infield combination for the Chicago Cubs.

Shortstop Dansby Swanson and second baseman Nico Hoerner, who are entering their second season as double-play partners, were named among the Top 10 at their positions as the series concluded with the release of the Top 10 relief pitchers.

Swanson, who is entering his second year with the Cubs, was ranked No. 4 at shortstop after a Gold Glove-winning debut with Chicago. He is entering the second year of his seven-year deal with the Cubs. He moved up from No. 6 in 2023.

The only players ahead of him were Texas’ Corey Seager, the New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor and San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts.

Hoerner, who moved to second base after the Cubs signed Swanson to play shortstop, made his debut in the Top 10 at No. 10. It’s a position dominated by veterans, with Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers at No. 1, followed by Houston’s Jose Altuve and Texas’ Marcus Semien.

Hoerner was a finalist for a Gold Glove in his first full season at second base opposite Swanson.

The only other Cubs player to make the list was right fielder Seiya Suzuki, who was ranked No. 6. He was not ranked last year. Again, the position is stacked with great players, with reigning National League MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. of Atlanta at the top of the list.

Houston’s Kyle Tucker was ranked second and the New York Yankees’ Juan Soto was ranked third.

The rankings were based on data collected by the MLB Network research team. The rankings were based on past player performance, a number of offensive and defensive metrics, both advanced data and traditional numbers.
