The Chicago Cubs Could End Up With Shohei Ohtani After Potential Free Agency

Could the Chicago Cubs have a chance at snagging Shohei Ohtani should he opt for free agency?

The Chicago Cubs could be linked to Los Angeles Angels standout Shohei Ohtani if he opts for free agency, according to USA Today baseball insider Bob Nightengale.

In Nightengale’s weekly notebook, he lists the Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners and the Angels as the most likely teams to sign Ohtani.

“Yet, the sleeper in the Ohtani free-agent frenzy, several baseball executives predict, are the Chicago Cubs,” Nightengale wrote. “They were the only team outside the AL West and NL West that were on Ohtani’s original list when he left Japan six years ago, and certainly, they have plenty of money stored up to pay Ohtani whatever he desires.”

An American League executive was quoted as saying, “I could easily see him going” to Chicago.

Wow, would that be something. Cubs tickets would likely sell out in minutes.

With the ability to pitch and play the field at such a high level, Ohtani could command the largest free agent deal in the history of Major League Baseball.

Ohtani is currently playing on a one-year, $30 million contract with the Angels.

Stay tuned. This is certainly a storyline to watch closely.
