Since the Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 2016, they have struggled mightily to find a leadoff hitter.

Until now.

Nico Hoerner has continued to prove his mettle in that role and the Cubs couldn’t be happier.

"He's just kind of the tone setter," Cubs manager David Ross said of Hoerner. "He's a phenomenal hitter. He has a lot of confidence in himself, and I think we've just really touched the edge of what he can be."

Hoerner ripped a two-run home run in the Cubs’ 9-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

Hoerner had two hits and has now reached base in 18 consecutive games, extending a career-best streak. Hoerner has reached base in 19 of the Cubs' 20 games this season.

Coming to the ballpark and seeing his name at the top of the lineup card has been heartwarming for Hoerner.

"To truly know the same thing every day is a huge luxury in our game," Hoerner told reporters. "It really allows you to just take care of your work and go from there. I'm really grateful to have that opportunity."

Hoerner finished Saturday with 33 total hits to lead MLB. He’s hitting .367.

Hoerner has two home runs and five doubles.

The power has been a pleasant surprise.

“Obviously, hitting for more power makes you a lot more valuable player," Hoerner said. "I know it's something I can do, so it's just continuing to figure out how that happens organically."

Regardless, Hoerner has been extremely consistent and Ross is rewarding him in the lineup. It’s working.
