Max Scherzer's Return Pushed Back After Saturday Postponement

Scherzer, who was eligible to return Monday for the series finale with Atlanta, will now likely return versus the Detroit Tigers instead.

Saturday's game between the Mets and Atlanta Braves has been postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up as part of a split-admission doubleheader on Saturday, Aug. 12.

The Mets, who were slated to play a four-game set with Atlanta starting Friday, had that game shortened due to rain, and with more rain in the forecast Sunday, might be in line for another postponement.

While it will give the players some extra rest, it also means that Max Scherzer won’t pitch in this series and will instead be eligible to return when New York plays the Detroit Tigers next week.

Scherzer, 38, was suspended for 10 games on April 20 after he was ejected for having a foreign substance on his hand during the Mets bout with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Scherzer was adamant about having rosin on his hand mixed with sweat, but chose not to appeal the decision.

With an already banged up Mets rotation, getting Scherzer back for the Braves series would have been a huge boost, but in the near future, the team should have both him and Justin Verlander ready to go sooner rather than later.

On the year so far, Scherzer has a 3.72 ERA in four starts.
