Mets, Blue Jays, Cubs All Options To Sign Free Agent Slugger

New York will have some competition for the free-agent utility man

The New York Mets may look a little different when Opening Day rolls around.

New York has been linked to a handful of free agents who are still available and it wouldn't be surprising to see a deal get done in the near future.

One player who has been popping up lately as an option for New York is veteran utility man J.D. Davis after recently being released by the San Francisco Giants despite a strong 2023 season.

Davis appeared in 144 games with the Giants last season and clubbed 18 home runs and drove in 69 runs while slashing .248/.325/.413. He recently was released after San Francisco signed four-time Gold Glove Award winner Matt Chapman.

New York reportedly has been looking into a reunion but the club will have some competition for his services as the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs also are seen as options, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"J.D. Martinez remains a consideration for the Mets, as well as the (Los Angeles Angels)," Heyman said. "J.D. Davis is, too, though the (Toronto Blue Jays) and (Chicago Cubs) make sense for him, as well."

Davis spent three-plus seasons with the Mets and had arguably the best season of his career with the club. He dealt with injuries but was able to appear in 140 games in 2019 and clubbed 22 home runs, drove in 57 runs, and slashed .307/.369/.527.

The Mets have been linked to multiple designated hitter and third base options in free agency and Davis could help out.
